The Cardinal's Tapestry
The Cardinal’s Tapestry is a repeat pattern tapestry depicting flowers and fruit on a red background. The border shows putti carrying further flowers and fruit. This may be an ecclesiastical tapestry as the emblems contain the a cross with letters HIS, the monogram symbolising Jesus Christ.
In the centre of the bottom border is a coat of arms. This is topped with a cross with a double traverse, a 15th century mark. On the cross sits a hat, known as a gelaro, with ten tassels. This is the pattern for the four prelates at the papal court, called ‘di fiocchetto’, and as such would have belonged to one of the highest administrative officers of the pope's household.
